What Are the Physical Signs and Symptoms of Low Testosterone?

Posted by Tina Jones, N.P. on Feb 15, 2015 12:00:00 PM

Testosterone is a critical hormone, especially in the male body. When testosterone levels start to decrease with age, this can cause an array of health issues, including a number of physical health effects. It is important to be able to identify these so that once they occur, you can quickly get the help necessary to improve your testosterone level to alleviate your symptoms.

Sexual Function Problems

Since testosterone is the primary hormone of the male reproductive system, sexual function issues are common with low testosterone. Problems can include:

  • Spontaneous erection
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Reduced desire for sexual intercourse
  • Infertility

Shifts in Your Physique

A man's physical appearance can change as a result of low testosterone. These changes can include:

  • Increased body fat
  • Decreased body hair
  • Decreased muscle mass
  • Breast tissue tenderness and swelling

Sleep Disturbances

It is common to experience sleep problems with this condition. Sleep apnea is a more severe effect. Men can also experience significant fatigue and insomnia.

Increasing Your Testosterone Levels

Traditional testosterone therapy means using a synthetic testosterone to increase the levels of this hormone in the body. Since the testosterone used in this therapy is synthetic and not natural, it poses the risk of potentially significant side effects, such as:

  • Sleep apnea
  • Enlarged prostate
  • Too many red blood cells
  • Fluid retention
  • Infertility
  • Skin reactions

If you have identified symptoms of low testosterone in you, the better option for boosting these levels is bio-identical hormone therapy. This uses a natural testosterone that is as close as naturally-occurring testosterone as it gets. It uses a plant-based substance that the body sees in the same way it sees the testosterone that the body produces. This ensures much safer and effective testosterone replacement.
